Akathist Hymn of Trust in God

Kontakion 1

O God my Creator, You are the only Father of humankind and therefore to be trusted for forgiveness of trespasses and provision of daily bread. Otherwise, I have no righteousness and no nurture, but only wretchedness and decay. You Are That You Are, and all things are possible with You:

Glory to You, O God, since my beginnings, and Glory to You forevermore.

Ikos 1

O Lord my God, here am I, because You created me and placed me among the multitudes on earth. I was not forgotten but given purpose and hope within the Holy Church. Hence, I trust my days will be completed in Your wisdom and there is nothing for me to fear:

Truly, the earth was created and sanctified to bring forth fruit.

Truly, everything is meant to grow and be pleasing in Your sight.

Truly, humankind was created to live in spiritual communion.

Truly, everyone is valued because they are made in Your image.

Truly, I see Your handiwork in the stars above my darkest nights.

Truly, I see Your image even in my neighbor who sees me not.

Truly, I hear Your tenderness in the birds singing at my window.

Truly, I hear Your sovereignty in the choirs singing “Lord, have mercy.”

Truly, there is no other possibility beyond Your universe.

Truly, You are the Divine Creator and glorious in Your works.

Truly, there is no further doctrine outside Your revelation.

Truly, You are the Heavenly Father and perfect in Your ways.

Glory to You, O God, since my beginnings, and Glory to You forevermore.

Kontakion 2

Dear God, because You Are What You Are, I am not what I used to be, for I am constantly repenting and in a process of transformation. You are holy, and I pray to be found holy in Your sight. I trust in Your goodness and mercy which give meaning to my journey, and I thankfully say: Alleluia.

Ikos 2

Holy God, from my youth I have sought Your ways, whether consciously or subconsciously. Yet, throughout my life I have committed sins, whether knowingly or unknowingly. May I no longer trust in that which is tainted or fleeting, but only in the fullness which You have prepared for me:

Truly, the spiral is downward and crushing for the willful sinner.

Truly, the journey is forward and uplifting for the genuine seeker.

Truly, the gratification of evil is attractive to the envious and spiteful.

Truly, the gift of life is rewarding to the patient and charitable.

Truly, those who criticize Your authority will never know joy.

Truly, those who reject Your precepts will always be angry.

Truly, those who obstruct Your plan will never know completion.

Truly, those who refuse Your mercy will always be inadequate.

Truly, I trust that the sun will rise and set each day.

Truly, I trust even more in Your forgiveness and reconciliation.

Truly, I trust that springtime will follow winter each year.

Truly, I trust even more in Your wisdom and provision.

Glory to You, O God, since my beginnings, and Glory to You forevermore.

Kontakion 3

Only to You, my All-Knowing God, do I pour out my distress: my heartache and grief, my fatigue and pain, and my starvation in society. Help me, for I have no schemes to prosper me. I am hidden in Your mercy, for You are the God Who blesses a path for me, and I arise and say: Alleluia.

Ikos 3

Only in You, my All-Seeing God, do I invest my hope: my deepest longing for Heaven, my bold desire to contribute to the Holy Church, my greatest wish to connect with all humankind through prayer, and my perpetual hope to bring forth acceptable fruit:

Truly, instruction works to the good of those who seek righteousness.

Truly, correction is not offensive but builds sobriety and virtue.

Truly, forgiveness is granted to those who confess their sins.

Truly, absolution is not magical but promotes triumph over evil.

Truly, You Only know my heart.

Truly, You Only sent light into my prison.

Truly, You Only see my suffering.

Truly, You Only sent ointment for my sores.

Truly, prayer is my joining.

Truly, the Church is my healing.

Truly, worship is my belonging.

Truly, the Body is my enlivening.

Glory to You, O God, since my beginnings, and Glory to You forevermore.

Kontakion 4

O God, if not You, then the world. If not You, then evil. If not You, then I perish, for the world scorns me and the devil chases me. Let me not succumb to external forces, but sustain me with right worship and true teachings. Oh, to look up into Heaven and confidently say: Alleluia.

Ikos 4

O Father, let me be Your child, for I repent, and let me therefore inherit the riches of the Kingdom. Let me be ready for the hour of death and be found worthy of eternal life with the saints and martyrs. I care not if the world rejects me, only let my life be pleasing to You:

Truly, my sins are repugnant and I am undeserving of salvation.

Truly, all the more reason to give thanks for the Gospel message.

Truly, my soul was troubled and I was left alone at the crossroads.

Truly, all the more incentive to take the path of unceasing prayer.

Truly, the worldly ridicule the Church’s wisdom.

Truly, the devil resents the believer’s inheritance.

Truly, the prideful covet glory for themselves.

Truly, the unrepentant bring corruption to others.

Truly, Your love is incomprehensively offered.

Truly, Your forgiveness is wondrously granted.

Truly, Your mercy is abundantly bestowed.

Truly, Your tenderness is beautifully revealed.

Glory to You, O God, since my beginnings, and Glory to You forevermore.

Kontakion 5

People can be so wrong about life and love, and yet so willing to impose their views on everyone else. Their arguments are convincing, but You, Holy God, do not require that I argue with anyone, for Your truths proceed by revelation and apostolic understanding, and I can only say: Alleluia.

Ikos 5

Dear God, I trust in the apostles because I trust in You, because the apostles followed Your Son, Jesus Christ. Likewise, I trust in the fathers because they expounded the doctrine of the apostles, since the time of Pentecost and throughout the history of the Church:

Truly, You have never left the contrite without a response.

Truly, You provide divine truth to everyone who seeks.

Truly, You have never gone absent from life and love.

Truly, You supply holy wisdom to every generation of believers.

Truly, those who spread lies shall be judged as a result.

Truly, those who use deception shall be summoned to answer.

Truly, those who institute falsehood are not to be obeyed.

Truly, those who preach distortions are not to be followed.

Truly, my path is gilded with the sayings of the elders.

Truly, my home is enriched with icons of the saints.

Truly, my heart is purified by prayer and worship.

Truly, my mind is fortified by reading and listening.

Glory to You, O God, since my beginnings, and Glory to You forevermore.

Kontakion 6

O Heavenly Father, be not annoyed with the manner of my speech or the explanations of my being, for I have waited a lifetime to express myself thusly. I am not a schemer, but a voyager with no harbor in this world, and therefore I cry out to my Creator and I sincerely say: Alleluia.

Ikos 6

Yes, I continue to say “alleluia” in the light of day and in the darkness of night, whether in health or sickness, and throughout all my daily tasks. Holy God, I will not abuse Your mercy, but I trust completely in Your desire for my salvation and Your guidance in my growth:

Truly, You make a way where there is no way.

Truly, my journey testifies of Your faithfulness.

Truly, You have mercy upon whomever You will.

Truly, my survival has depended on Your condescension.

Truly, the rivers flow endlessly through time.

Truly, the stars shine brightly for all to see.

Truly, the desert blooms lilies in sudden beauty.

Truly, the forest gives shelter to many creatures.

Truly, those who love You love multitudes.

Truly, those who obey You save thousands.

Truly, those who hope in You bear fruit.

Truly, those who trust in You conquer evil.

Glory to You, O God, since my beginnings, and Glory to You forevermore.

Kontakion 7

Your ways are mysterious, O Lord God, and too wonderful for me. Yet, I do not trust in You blindly but wholeheartedly, for Your ways are to my benefit. You have called me forth to participate in the history of the Holy Church, and so I cast aside my myriad lusts and I humbly say: Alleluia.

Ikos 7

O God of all that is, God throughout every time and place, God upon the hills and houses, God Who leads His people over times of troubles, Your judgments are pure and You are my God. I  trust in You, for You can do no wrong, and so I rightly acknowledge, “Thy will be done:”

Truly, I denounce the ways of self-justification.

Truly, I renounce worldly ambition and vainglory.

Truly, I walk away from the habits of self-centeredness.

Truly, I leave behind the old pleasures and lifestyle.

Truly, You defend the fatherless.

Truly, You shelter the motherless.

Truly, You compensate the friendless.

Truly, You gladden the childless.

Truly, each day is another opportunity.

Truly, each person is to be a living icon.

Truly, the years prove Your blessings.

Truly, the ages display Your works.

Glory to You, O God, since my beginnings, and Glory to You forevermore.

Kontakion 8

Dear God, I feel no vengeance toward anyone for I myself am in need of forgiveness, and because I trust in Your perfect knowledge of all people and events. I shall rejoice from this point forward, that I may apply myself to prayer and mercy, and to this I cheerfully say: Alleluia.

Ikos 8

Holy God, I am a believer and therefore I suffer. There are some who would subvert the Holy Church. Their schemes are ungodly, but my trust in You ensures my victory over all enemies of righteousness. Undeniably, my suffering is only a passageway to joy and eternal life:

Truly, You are the God Who hears every prayer and every curse.

Truly, You are the God Who sees every sacrifice and every theft.

Truly, You are the God Who is either worshipped or disregarded.

Truly, You are the God Who is either appreciated or despised.

Truly, my faith was strained but I prayed for purity of heart.

Truly, all the more inspiration to proceed with constant love.

Truly, my body was ailing but I prayed for renewal of purpose.

Truly, all the more motivation to endure to the end.

Truly, those who exalt You are known by their humility.

Truly, those who praise You are known by their gratitude.

Truly, those who hear the harp will be awakened.

Truly, those who see the candles will be guided.

Glory to You, O God, since my beginnings, and Glory to You forevermore.

Kontakion 9

Always to You, my Sovereign God, do I dedicate each day: finding myself alive in hope and not dead in sin, praying to You even before I get out of bed, thankful that I can see and walk, desiring to do Your will, and amazed that a leper like me is fortunate to say: Alleluia.

Ikos 9

Always in You, my Almighty God, do I conduct my daily activities: always under Your guidance and according to Your holy will, always in deference to the teachings of the apostles and fathers, always in imitation of the saints and martyrs, and always humbled by Your attentiveness:

Truly, my cup overflows with the nectar of truth.

Truly, You have taken me beyond what I envisioned.

Truly, my labor has gained a surplus of profits.

Truly, You have given me more than I earned.

Truly, the corn has ripened in my fields.

Truly, the olives can be picked in my orchard.

Truly, the table is laid with silver and linen.

Truly, the festive meal is ready to be served.

Truly, You and You only are the source of all goodness.

Truly, You and You alone are the cause of all abundance.

Truly, You and forever You are the sender of all deliverance.

Truly, You and always You are the bestower of all mercy.

Glory to You, O God, since my beginnings, and Glory to You forevermore.

Kontakion 10

O God, if I do not trust in You then there is no one else to trust except the devil, and God help me! Oh, forbid the devil to mislead me in any way. My God, prevent me from going backwards, stop me from repeating past sins, and direct me to holiness that I may say: Alleluia.

Ikos 10

O Father, show me the way to the Kingdom, for all else results in divisions and disruptions. Preserve me in the unity of the Holy Church, make me of one accord with the apostles who preached and suffered, and keep me on the path of unceasing prayer. My God, let all my words glorify You:

Truly, the storms almost destroyed me.

Truly, the nights would have consumed me.

Truly, the beasts nearly devoured me.

Truly, the worms would have invaded me.

Truly, falsehood never satisfied me.

Truly, worldliness never fulfilled me.

Truly, arguments never nourished me.

Truly, decadence never consoled me.

Truly, Your holy mercy saved me.

Truly, Your forgiveness restored me.

Truly, Your divine pity released me.

Truly, Your forbearance assured me.

Glory to You, O God, since my beginnings, and Glory to You forevermore.

Kontakion 11

O Heavenly Father, be not exasperated with my junctions and standstills, for I am slow learner. The lessons of life are lessons in holiness, and so I trust in the benevolence of my Creator and Designer. I shall proceed on the path put before me, for it is a path of mercy and I gladly say: Alleluia.

Ikos 11

Yes, I would have preferred to be smarter and faster, and I am guilty of having envied the schemers, but I am a prodigal and I have been forgiven much. Holy God, let me love much, let me live in truth, let me discern the spirits, and let me praise You for the remainder of my days:

Truly, the Ship is taking on new passengers.

Truly, the Church is increasing Her participants.

Truly, the orphans and widows are welcomed.

Truly, the lepers and strangers may enter therein.

Truly, You are for us, Dear God.

Truly, You know how to call us to holiness.

Truly, You are with us, Holy God.

Truly, You know how to work through us.

Truly, I repent in dust and ashes.

Truly, I return to the Father.

Truly, I seek the Kingdom first.

Truly, I cast my nets into the deep.

Glory to You, O God, since my beginnings, and Glory to You forevermore.

Kontakion 12

The journey begins anew each day, for there are never two sunrises alike nor two lilies exactly the same. O Lord God, You are unchanging and yet infinitely varied in the details of Your creation. You created me, and I thank You for the gift of life and for a capacity to trust and say: Alleluia.

Ikos 12

O God of everyone who was ever born and ever will be born on this earth, God of beginnings and endings, God of every moment, God of the seasons and all fruitfulness, God of mercy and forgiveness, You are my God and my only loyalty is to You and the Holy Church:

Truly, those inside the Church are the people of God.

Truly, those outside the Church are sheep to be united.

Truly, those who are baptized are a royal priesthood.

Truly, those who are not baptized are a harvest to be gained.

Truly, youth is not wasted in worship.

Truly, age is not misspent in prayer.

Truly, life is not squandered in reading the Psalms.

Truly, time is not misused in celebrating the feast days.

Truly, You saw every step I took toward truth.

Truly, You heard every question I asked about life.

Truly, You guided my feet to the Church and to the hills.

Truly, You directed my eyes to the icons and to the lilies.

Glory to You, O God, since my beginnings, and Glory to You forevermore.

Kontakion 13

O God, my God and the only God, since You knew me from the beginning, I trust You will guide me in holiness to the end of my days. For this I ask, that You will complete the work You started in me: for everlasting  victory, for Your Name and to Your Glory. Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

(Repeat Kontakion 13 three times.)

Kontakion 1 (repeated)

O God my Creator, You are the only Father of humankind and therefore to be trusted for forgiveness of trespasses and provision of daily bread. Otherwise, I have no righteousness and no nurture, but only wretchedness and decay. You Are That You Are, and all things are possible with You:

Truly, You are the Heavenly Father and perfect in Your ways.

Glory to You, O God, since my beginnings, and Glory to You forevermore.

 A Prayer

O God in Heaven, the Creator of earth and humankind, You have shown me compassion even though my awareness of Your ways was deficient in knowledge and discolored by my sins. For, I had heard of You from afar, according to partial understandings as well as mistaken notions, and so I approached You from the viewpoint of a foreigner having no inclusion and no path.

Yet, You instilled within me a desire to pursue truth, and You infused me with an instinctive unhappiness regarding biased distortions and broken fragments. You implanted within me a yearning for pure love and tender mercy. Dear God, You were with me from the beginning though I felt it not. Holy God, You directed my steps even when I thought I had been forgotten. Sovereign God, You did not condemn me but forgave me and brought me out of worldly complications and into Churchly perception.

These things I say not from pride or delusion, but from the journey of my life and from my conviction that You are God, and You are always God no matter the opposition. Notwithstanding, I repent of my inconstancy, I abhor my transgressions, and I pray to trust in You now and until the end of my life on earth. Forgive me and bless me, and let me uphold truth and charity. In Your mercy, O God, I shall live each day and gratefully continue until my last breath. Amen.
