Akathist Hymn of Preparation for Holy Communion

Kontakion 1

O Lord Jesus Christ, look not upon my sins which are abysmal, but rather consider my quest for holiness, a quest which You Yourself instilled and directed, and accept me at Your holy chalice. It is You, and only You, Who called me out of darkness that I might wholeheartedly proclaim:

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, my Immortal King and Eternal God.

Ikos 1

It is not possible that I was baptized into the Holy Church without Your foreknowledge of all my defects, and yet You died on the Cross for me and showed me that You are the Way to the Heavenly Kingdom. Believing in Your sacrifice and Your love of mankind, I approach with hope and trust:

Glory to You, my only deliverance from the consequences of sin.

Glory to You, my only passage to inclusion among the sanctified.

Glory to You, for Your Incarnation illuminates every seeker of truth.

Glory to You, for Your Crucifixion assembles the repentant together.

Glory to You, the end of anguish, the beginning of joyfulness.

Glory to You, the Body of mercy, the Blood of forgiveness.

Glory to You, for You opened Your arms to sinners, and I am foremost.

Glory to You, for You sacrificed Your life for me, an unworthy beneficiary.

Glory to You, my Very Lord and Master suffering on the Cross.

Glory to You, my Good Shepherd giving His life for the flock.

Glory to You, for a night of prayer and meditation.

Glory to You, for a morning of worship and preparation.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, my Immortal King and Eternal God.

Kontakion 2

There is no other place, Dear Jesus, where I can realize union with the Divine except as a member of the Holy Church. There is no other way, except to come forward despite my failures and to partake of Your Life-Giving Body and Blood, and so I boldly say: Alleluia.

Ikos 2

Hence, unless I am handed over to Satan instantly, I shall partake of Holy Communion today and trust in Your mercy. If You do not condemn me for my sins, but instead offer Your Body and Blood as medicine, then let the Church doors open unto me that I may thrive and not perish:

Glory to You, my essential hope and my utmost yearning for holiness.

Glory to You, my ultimate trust and my deepest longing for sacredness.

Glory to You, for You were baptized in fulfillment of all righteousness.

Glory to You, for You were transfigured in revelation of Your Divinity.

Glory to You, the defeat of evil, the victory of good.

Glory to You, the Last Prophet, my First Love.

Glory to You, for You sent the Twelve and the Seventy, and I awaken.

Glory to You, for You gave them authority to loose sins, and I arise.

Glory to You, my Savior baptized in the river by St. John the Forerunner.

Glory to You, my Very God worshipped on the mount by Elijah and Moses.

Glory to You, for the sunrise over the hills in the distance.

Glory to You, for the sunset upon the homes of the faithful.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, my Immortal King and Eternal God.

Kontakion 3

Oh, to enter a church and behold the iconostasis. Yea, to dare and lift my eyes to Your icon, Jesus Christ, for I cannot do otherwise. I can only repent and bring forth the fruits of repentance as God sees fit, for I can neither hide my sins nor hinder the upbuilding of the Kingdom, and I say: Alleluia.

Ikos 3

Let me look as well upon the icon of Mary, Blessed among Women, the Theotokos who gave birth to Salvation and who invites the faithful to the holy chalice. Oh, to approach with fear and trembling, and to receive with a disposition of meekness and gratitude, for I cannot do otherwise:

Glory to You, my only understanding of life and love.

Glory to You, my only undertaking of work and prayer.

Glory to You, for Your tomb was empty as Mary Magdalene discovered.

Glory to You, for Your death was triumphal as the Myrrhbearers learned.

Glory to You, the sacrifice of Holy Friday, the solemnity on Saturday.

Glory to You, the joy of the Resurrection, the awe of Eternity.

Glory to You, for You continue to walk among us, and I hear and see.

Glory to You, for You know those who love You, and I repent daily.

Glory to You, my Salvation Who saved not Himself but saved others.

Glory to You, my Redemption Who paid the total price of iniquities.

Glory to You, for the sound a church bell.

Glory to You, for the sight of a holy icon.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, my Immortal King and Eternal God.

Kontakion 4

O Lord Jesus Christ, there is none gloomier than I and none brighter than You, and so l pray that Your light will infiltrate every particle of impurity in my heart and mind. Let me receive Holy Communion to the victory of Your illumination over my sinful tendencies, that I may say: Alleluia.

Ikos 4

Have mercy upon me, for the worldly do not love me but they would accept me if I conformed to their ungodliness. Therefore, Dear Jesus, I must rely on Your Life-Giving Body and Blood to infuse me with holiness and transform me into a vigorous member of the Church:

Glory to You, forgiver of my trespasses into this very moment.

Glory to You, unfathomable and immeasurable.

Glory to You, healer of my childhood and redeemer of my adulthood.

Glory to You, innocent and perfect.

Glory to You, purchaser of my salvation when I was a stranger to holiness.

Glory to You, merciful and longsuffering.

Glory to You, for I am forgiven and therefore capable of love.

Glory to You, for I am enriched and therefore ready to plant.

Glory to You, for I am restored and therefore indebted to the Cross.

Glory to You, for I am uplifted and therefore grateful to the Church.

Glory to You, for I am heard and therefore strengthened.

Glory to You, for I am seen and therefore encouraged.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, my Immortal King and Eternal God.

Kontakion 5

Cast me not away, Jesus Christ, though my failures be numerous. Let Your Crucifixion not be in vain, though I am the poorest among those who call themselves Christian. Accept even me, the least of your followers, that your sacrifice might save every soul, and to this I say: Alleluia.

Ikos 5

In truth, I rejoice to be the least member of the Church if it means I may participate in the Divine Liturgy, for the alternative is to be cast into outer darkness. I do not deserve to receive Holy Communion but, in accordance with Your Incarnation and Crucifixion, I humbly come forward:

Glory to You, mender of my broken bones which crippled me.

Glory to You, incomparable and unsurpassed.

Glory to You, restorer of my diseased eyes which blinded me.

Glory to You, Alpha and Omega.

Glory to You, soother of my infected sores which crazed me.

Glory to You, compassionate and generous.

Glory to You, for I am guided and therefore not deceived by heresy.

Glory to You, for I am directed and therefore not seduced by fantasy.

Glory to You, for I am baptized and therefore not valued by society.

Glory to You, for I am called and therefore not wanted by the majority.

Glory to You, for I am truth’s and therefore prosperous.

Glory to You, for I am mercy’s and therefore abundant.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, my Immortal King and Eternal God.

Kontakion 6

There is not any sin of which I am not guilty, whether in thought, word, or deed. If I could live life over, I would want to live differently but I would still be prone to failure unless I turned to You, Jesus Christ, which I do now even if at the eleventh hour, for I fervently say: Alleluia.

Ikos 6

Glory to You in the manger. Glory to You on the Cross. Glory to You, Dear Jesus, for every word You spoke and every miracle You worked. Glory to You for finding me when I was lost in the crowd and alone in the night. Glory to You for bringing me to Your holy chalice of deifying love:

Glory to You, conqueror of my enemies who ridicule my life of prayer.

Glory to You, undefeatable and indomitable.

Glory to You, rebuker of my foes who criticize my hope and trust.

Glory to You, pillar and bulwark.

Glory to You, slayer of my own passions which war against the virtues.

Glory to You, unchanging and undiminishing.

Glory to You, for I am sinful and therefore grateful for salvation.

Glory to You, for I am wretched and therefore thankful for help.

Glory to You, for I am weak and therefore glad to cling to You.

Glory to You, for I am lost and therefore cheerful to belong to You.

Glory to You, for I am criminal and therefore saved.

Glory to You, for I am blameworthy and therefore redeemed.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, my Immortal King and Eternal God.

Kontakion 7

O Lord Jesus Christ, You sat and ate with the Twelve, giving them bread and the cup. You instructed them to eat of Your Body and drink of Your Blood, and to do this in memory of You. Therefore, with them and with all Christians throughout the ages, I reverently say: Alleluia.

Ikos 7

To partake of Your Holy Body and Blood is to be made holy, sanctified and illuminated, for the healing of body and soul, strengthened and renewed, for the correction of every aspect of life, purified and transformed, and to increase in virtue and uphold the Commandments:

Glory to You, for my sins are extensive but Your purity establishes me.

Glory to You, for my wounds are painful but Your innocence revives me.

Glory to You, the very heart of my prayers.

Glory to You, the only core of my being.

Glory to You, Jesus, for the dedication of Your apostles.

Glory to You, Jesus, for their preservation of doctrine.

Glory to You, for every church where praises are sung.

Glory to You, for every believer who shows hospitality.

Glory to You, and let me not be a hypocrite.

Glory to You, and let me not be a traitor.

Glory to You, for the countless times You have forgiven me.

Glory to You, for the numberless mercies You have shown me.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, my Immortal King and Eternal God.

Kontakion 8

It is good to receive Holy Communion and not to languish, and therefore I walk up to the holy chalice with the brethren. It is intended that I dwell in You, Dear Jesus, and You in me, and it is for this reason that I prepare myself according to the ways of the Church, that I may say: Alleluia.

Ikos 8

To live without You is to be adrift in the ways of the world and susceptible to the manipulations of Satan, and without recourse. As a believer, I am hated and attacked. But I have You, Jesus Christ, for I repent before the holy icons and I am fortified with Your Body and Blood:

Glory to You, for my thoughts are muddled but You lead me to sanity.

Glory to You, for my emotions are tangled but You bring me to stability.

Glory to You, the very meaning of my life.

Glory to You, the only purpose of my efforts.

Glory to You, Jesus, for the examples of Your saints.

Glory to You, Jesus, for their guidance from Heaven.

Glory to You, for every Bible studied in people’s homes.

Glory to You, for every icon venerated in the monasteries.

Glory to You, and let me not be consumed by unruly passions.

Glory to You, and let me not be overcome by insatiable cravings.

Glory to You, for Your patience within all my misgivings.

Glory to You, for Your loyalty through all my disruptions.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, my Immortal King and Eternal God.

Kontakion 9

On Sunday morning or on a feast day, let me prepare for Holy Communion in all earnestness, for to partake unworthily is to bring condemnation upon myself. Let the world condemn me, but not You, Jesus Christ, for it would be better never to say anything if I could not say: Alleluia.

Ikos 9

Let my conscience be clean, inasmuch as I have confessed my sins and taken responsibility for my words and actions. Let me be a pure child, a true friend, a wise adult, an honest worker, a charitable giver and a protector of the vulnerable, and primarily Your humble disciple:

Glory to You, for life can be complicated but You draw me to prayer.

Glory to You, for the world can be difficult but You give me peace.

Glory to You, the very hope of my deficiencies.

Glory to You, the only courage of my inadequacies.

Glory to You, Jesus, for the intercessions of Your Mother.

Glory to You, Jesus, for her vigilance over the churches.

Glory to You, for every penitent on the straight path.

Glory to You, for every newcomer from the multitudes.

Glory to You, and let me not fearfully consent to malice.

Glory to You, and let me not silently approve of evil.

Glory to You, for I would have sinned if You had not obstructed me.

Glory to You, for I would have fallen if You had not prevented me.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, my Immortal King and Eternal God.

Kontakion 10

O Lord Jesus Christ, Your mercy is not to be taken for granted, Your sacrifice should not be underrated, and Your gentleness must not be abused as license to sin. You paid the price, ghastly and undeserved, and therefore I will be judged as disciple or traitor, even as I say: Alleluia.

Ikos 10

For that cause, for the sake of eternal life, for the glory of the Cross, for the thousands around me, if not for me then for them, if no hope for me then for my loved ones, enable me to partake of Your glorious Body and Blood faithfully and joyfully:

Glory to You, my new day after a lifetime of sin.

Glory to You, my bright sun at the eleventh hour.

Glory to You, truly trustworthy, even though I repeatedly failed.

Glory to You, always wondrous, even though I constantly floundered.

Glory to You, the One Who was persecuted by the fanatical Saul.

Glory to You, the One Who was preached by the repentant Paul.

Glory to You, for You unlocked the doors which were closed to me.

Glory to You, for You renewed my mind unto the Divine Liturgy.

Glory to You, for You taught holiness in a way understandable to me.

Glory to You, for You wrote the ways of Godliness on my heart.

Glory to You, for You grew lilies in the desert which was allotted to me.

Glory to You, for You bestowed the grace of repentance in my soul.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, my Immortal King and Eternal God.

Kontakion 11

May the soul that partakes of Holy Communion also pray to Your holy Mother, the Ever-Virgin Mary who is the Handmaid of God and the Queen of Heaven. Yea, she is the Protectress, Mediatress, and Directress of the Christian race, and with heartfelt devotion I say: Alleluia.

Ikos 11

The Theotokos ever guides me through the hazards of life, encourages me to acknowledge my sins and to repent, searches for me when I am lost, accepts my prayers morning and evening, and she points me to You, Jesus Christ, that I may honorably uphold the status of a Christian:

Glory to You, my divine remedy after the poisons I ingested.

Glory to You, my holy nourishment as I lie on my deathbed.

Glory to You, at all times enriching, even though I was often negligent.

Glory to You, in every way edifying, even though I was hardly attentive.

Glory to You, the One Who was held in the arms of the blessed Theotokos.

Glory to You, the One Who formed His true family of all believers.

Glory to You, for You halted the winds which were blowing against me.

Glory to You, for you sheltered my heart from gradual deterioration.

Glory to You, for You calmed the waves which were crashing upon me.

Glory to You, for You shielded my mind from sudden disintegration.

Glory to You, for You warded off the demons which were chasing me.

Glory to You, for You shaped all consequences to my advantage.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, my Immortal King and Eternal God.

Kontakion 12

The soul cannot live without food, and Your Body and Blood is the food of the faithful. I live for that life, for You, Jesus Christ, because Your life gives me life. It completes my quest beyond imagination and stops my descent into oblivion. Therefore, I give thanks and I truly say: Alleluia.

Ikos 12

Let the days accumulate, let the years pass by, let the seasons undergo their cycle, but let me, a sinner, receive Holy Communion unto everlasting life. Let the last be first in repentance, and let me go forward to the holy chalice and abide in You, Jesus Christ, and You in me:

Glory to You, my merciful vitality after my struggles in this world.

Glory to You, my compassionate centrality in my life of prayer.

Glory to You, thoroughly knowing, even though I was ignorant of myself.

Glory to You, entirely responsive, even though I was absorbed in myself.

Glory to You, the One Who told the disciples where to cast their nets.

Glory to You, the One Who told the Samaritan woman all she ever did.

Glory to You, for You attend to my slightest needs.

Glory to You, for You forgive my extreme wickedness.

Glory to You, for You sharpen my sensitivity to righteousness.

Glory to You, for You dull my attraction to worldliness.

Glory to You, for You focus my eyes on the pure and perfect.

Glory to You, for You lift my feet over the stones and thorns.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, my Immortal King and Eternal God.

Kontakion 13

If it were not for You, Dear Jesus, if it were not for Your Life-Giving Body and Blood, I would have perished long ago of disease or despair. But You heal me in many ways, You bless me as I come forward, and You are risen in my heart and mind and risen indeed. Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

(Repeat Kontakion 13 three times.)

Kontakion 1 (repeated)

O Lord Jesus Christ, look not upon my sins which are abysmal, but rather consider my quest for holiness, a quest which You Yourself instilled and directed, and accept me at Your holy chalice. It is You, and only You, Who called me out of darkness that I might wholeheartedly proclaim:

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, my Immortal King and Eternal God.

Ikos 1 (repeated)

A Prayer

O Lord Jesus Christ, truly my Immortal King and the King of all the earth, truly my Eternal God Who is sovereign and therefore all people must stand before You at the Divine Judgment, I pray always to have awareness of Your majesty and to trust in Your mercy. There is no other God but you, and no other Savior of sinners, and therefore I have no other path but the narrow path to Your Body and Blood. I am not worthy to follow that path, but I pray to be made worthy, and I pray to receive Holy Communion unto eternal life and the upbuilding of the Heavenly Kingdom. Let me be in You, Dear Jesus, and You in me, and may I be counted among those who love You and glorify You. Amen.
