Akathist Hymn of Gratitude to Jesus Christ

Kontakion 1

Lord Jesus Christ, we are Your disciples and we thank You for calling us to follow You and to become like You. We rejoice that we are known of You and are members of Your Holy Church. We live each day in thanksgiving for Your compassion, and we gladly say:

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, our Salvation and our First Love.

Ikos 1

Everything that You are and that You have done is deserving of gratitude, for You never failed or hurt anyone during Your ministry on earth. Jesus, You became like us in human form in order to give Your life for us. Thus, we find all meaning and happiness in Your love:

Jesus, worthy of admiration from elders and fishermen.

Jesus, deserving of respect from thieves and centurions.

Jesus, the only Savior to be mourned by the Holy Myrrhbearers.

Jesus, the only Redeemer to be grieved by the Apostle John.

Jesus, firm hope of the hopeless.

Jesus, true love of the unlovable.

Jesus, Immortal Whose garment was touched by the afflicted.

Jesus, Messiah Whose face was kissed by the traitor.

Jesus, divine triumph of goodness over treachery.

Jesus, heavenly victory of abundance over misery.

Jesus, the only Master Who extends an easy yoke.

Jesus, the only Physician Who bears a Life-Giving Cross.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, our Salvation and our First Love.

Kontakion 2

Now and always, Christ our Savior, we give heartfelt thanks to You. For Your Incarnation, we thank You, and for the renewal of our hearts and minds we give thanks. For Your daily responsiveness to our utmost needs and deepest yearnings, we are grateful and we say: Alleluia.

Ikos 2

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of David, Son of Abraham: You were given birth by the Virgin Mary and, with ineffable mercy, You became the God-Man in order to serve sinful man. Hence, we offer You the frankincense of our undying love and devotion:

Jesus, born to Mary in a time and place designated by God.

Jesus, cradled as an infant prepared for crucifixion and burial.

Jesus, having goodwill toward kings and shepherds.

Jesus, having compassion for Joseph who took Mary home.

Jesus, the only reason for celebration within suffering.

Jesus, the only cause of springtime after sorrow.

Jesus, true light upon the arena of the troubled.

Jesus, pure love upon the quest of the brokenhearted.

Jesus, showing kindness to all who bring acceptable frankincense.

Jesus, showing hospitality to all who travel from far off.

Jesus, rich mercy to the lowly.

Jesus, perfect way to the humble.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, our Salvation and our First Love.

Kontakion 3

Today and forever, Jesus, our gratitude fills our worship and prayers, our thoughts and feelings, and our whole being. If we were not believers, if You had not called us out of the darkness, then we could not awake each morning with love in our hearts and say: Alleluia.

Ikos 3

When You called Your disciples, they knew at once that You were the awaited Messiah, and they followed You. We see that Andrew, Peter, James and John became fishers of men through Your wisdom and mercy. We also gratefully respond to Your holy calling forth:

Jesus, beckoning those who have eyes to see.

Jesus, calling those who have ears to hear.

Jesus, the only bestowal of spiritual eyes.

Jesus, the only conferral of blessed ears.

Jesus, First Love of the first-called Andrew.

Jesus, strength and virtue of the rock Peter.

Jesus, genuine greatness of James and John.

Jesus, humble disposition among all the apostles.

Jesus, making beautiful those who worship You.

Jesus, building strong those who evangelize You.

Jesus, the only core of the prayerful.

Jesus, the only joy of the dedicated.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, our Salvation and our First Love.

Kontakion 4

Lord Jesus Christ, we do not deserve to be Your disciples. We are unclean and unfit, unpleasant and unkind. Yet, our repulsiveness renders us all the more grateful for Your Incarnation and Crucifixion, for Your calling forth into Your marvelous light, and for enabling us to say: Alleluia.

Ikos 4

We know that You cleansed ten lepers, as recorded in the Gospel of Luke, and only one came back to give thanks. We therefore come to You, Jesus, as miserable lepers to be healed and made whole. For this and for all Your mercies we lovingly return to You with praise and thanksgiving:

Jesus, unforgettable by Luke and by one leper out of ten.

Jesus, forsaken by braggarts and by nine other lepers.

Jesus, knowing the motivation of each one.

Jesus, wanting to be loved in return freely.

Jesus, the only wholeness of heart and mind.

Jesus, the only purity of being.

Jesus, Son of God, rejected upon Your outpouring of mercy.

Jesus, Savior of mankind, deserted upon Your working of miracles.

Jesus, teaching what it means to love and to love in return.

Jesus, guiding with sacred words and holy deeds.

Jesus, cornerstone of those who are chosen.

Jesus, crown of those who are faithful.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, our Salvation and our First Love.

Kontakion 5

Christ our Savior, having heard Your message, having seen Your apostles in the words of the New Testament and in our holy icons, having received Your invitation to “Come to Me” and accept the yoke of meekness, we place ourselves in Your tender care and we say: Alleluia.

Ikos 5

You gave thanks to Your Father, the Lord of Heaven and earth, for hiding the glad news from the wise and revealing it to babes. If we have seen and heard, if we have not neglected our opportunities to follow You, then send us forth in solemnity and joyfulness:

Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father.

Jesus, knowing the Father and one with Him.

Jesus, gracious welcome to the heavily laden.

Jesus, beautiful refuge to the worldly weary.

Jesus, the Only-Begotten Son of God.

Jesus, the only Way to the Father.

Jesus, Body and Blood of salvation.

Jesus, manifestation of redemption.

Jesus, the only Christ of God on the Cross.

Jesus, the only First Love of those in witness.

Jesus, offering love and purity to the tainted.

Jesus, bringing peace and truth to the misled.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, our Salvation and our First Love.

Kontakion 6

Every day and into this very moment, Jesus, we express our gratitude to You in our prayers and in our compassion for the needs of others. We are Your Church, and we are to be known by our love for one another. We also spread  our love throughout the world, saying: Alleluia.

Ikos 6

When You departed to a remote place to pray by Yourself, the multitudes heard of this and followed You. When You saw them, You were moved with compassion for them. You healed the sick among them, Jesus, and then You fed them from five loaves and two fish:

Jesus, compassionate God-Man to the five thousand men.

Jesus, benevolent Deliverer to the women and children also.

Jesus, thereby feeding as many as 20,000 people at once.

Jesus, thereby granting a great multitude their daily bread.

Jesus, worthy of everlasting devotion from the fulfilled.

Jesus, deserving of unceasing praise from the replenished.

Jesus, the only Divine Son attending to hungry souls.

Jesus, the only Eternal God multiplying loaves and fish.

Jesus, training Your disciples in faith and service.

Jesus, preparing Your people to worship and minister.

Jesus, nourishment for spiritual eyes and ears.

Jesus, conviction for the life of discipleship.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, our Salvation and our First Love.

Kontakion 7

Lord Jesus Christ, if we have eyes to see, then let us keep our eyes only on You and not on the turmoil around us. May we not doubt or hesitate, but always remember Your many works on behalf of mankind and be ready to exercise our trust in You and say: Alleluia.

Ikos 7

We know that You walked on water, Jesus, and Peter walked on water with You because he had faith and was obedient to Your command. When he took his eyes off You, when the wind blew over the waters, he began to sink. Yet, he called out to You for help, and You did not fail him:

Jesus, sent to the world to suffer.

Jesus, born on earth to be fruitful.

Jesus, affording opportunities of faith.

Jesus, generating times of wonderment.

Jesus, the only Deity Who says to fear not.

Jesus, the only Friend Who says to be of good cheer.

Jesus, reaching out to Peter as his First Love.

Jesus, hearing Peter affirm, “Truly You are the Son of God.”

Jesus, authority over the elements of wind and sea.

Jesus, ruler over feelings of distrust and uncertainty.

Jesus, the only One to look at.

Jesus, the only One to listen to.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, our Salvation and our First Love.

Kontakion 8

You radiated Your divine nature when You were transfigured on the mount, and the Father said, “This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased.” Yes, the Father is pleased, and we creatures are immensely thankful for Your great love and mercy, saying: Alleluia.

Ikos 8

Moses and Elijah worshipped You, the Father bore witness of You, and Peter, James and John beheld the divine glory of Your Person. We wish to be included with them in the Kingdom of Heaven, and we believe that You prepare a place for those who give thanks on earth:

Jesus, transfigured in revelation of Your Godly splendor.

Jesus, worshipped in recognition of Your divine majesty.

Jesus, then to be willingly crucified as a criminal.

Jesus, then to be voluntarily sacrificed for man’s crimes.

Jesus, the only God-Man to be transfigured and crucified.

Jesus, the only Messiah to be crucified and risen.

Jesus, pleasing God and saving mankind.

Jesus, glorifying God and serving creation.

Jesus, Savior, that everyone might see and hear spiritually.

Jesus, Redeemer, that everyone might have indestructible faith.

Jesus, reaching apostles as well as prophets.

Jesus, giving light to all the world.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, our Salvation and our First Love.

Kontakion 9

We thank You, Jesus, for blessing little children, for You love them in all holiness. We take this moment to pray for the safety and welfare of all children. We bring them to You for the gift of spiritual eyes and ears, that they may believe in You and thankfully say: Alleluia.

Ikos 9

May we all be children in guilelessness, trusting in You, Jesus, for there are many who long for that First Love. If we did not know of You in childhood, if others failed us in the most fundamental ways, then may we believe now and thank You for giving us this moment in time and for Eternity:

Jesus, First Love of children and all the baptized.

Jesus, Salvation of adults from the wounds of childhood.

Jesus, accepting the prayers of parents for their children.

Jesus, welcoming those children to receive Holy Communion.

Jesus, presenter of Mary to mankind as a maternal haven.

Jesus, giver of All Saints as spiritual fathers and mothers.

Jesus, seeing and hearing each man’s actions upon others.

Jesus, knowing the intentions of every heart and mind.

Jesus, forever to be thanked and not to be blamed.

Jesus, always to be followed and not to be overruled.

Jesus, the only child in the arms of Mary in the manger.

Jesus, the only youth in the temple at Jerusalem.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, our Salvation and our First Love.

Kontakion 10

Each day is a day of thanksgiving, Jesus, a new day to acknowledge how much there is to be thankful for, another day to worship You, a fresh day to ask for Your ongoing guidance and healing, a perfect day to pray for our families, neighbors, enemies and all the world, saying: Alleluia.

Ikos 10

We know that You confirmed the first and great Commandment, which is to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind. You then put forth the second great Commandment which is related to the first: to love our neighbor as ourselves. We thank You for Your spiritual illumination:

Jesus, Holiest Teacher of spirituality.

Jesus, Truest Friend of believers.

Jesus, the only mercy that never fades away.

Jesus, the only forgiveness that never loses value.

Jesus, clarifying what is essential to discipleship.

Jesus, describing what is acceptable to the Father.

Jesus, embodiment of forbearance and compassion.

Jesus, incarnation of truth and wisdom.

Jesus, the only chance for the heartbroken.

Jesus, the only opening for the unwanted.

Jesus, instructing everyone to love with their whole being.

Jesus, illustrating that people are made in the image of God.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, our Salvation and our First Love.

Kontakion 11

Lord Jesus Christ, when You went to Jerusalem to suffer many things, when the authorities ruled against You and the public supported their corruption, when You were treated cruelly, You suffered all these things that we might one day give thanks and say: Alleluia.

Ikos 11

You were crucified, our First Love Whom we love because You first loved us and gave Your life for us. May we never abandon You for a false god or lose our enthusiasm for You, but always stand at the foot of the Cross, ever praising and thanking You:

Jesus, degraded on Golgotha for the sake of giving abundant life.

Jesus, nailed on the Cross in order to rise again in victory.

Jesus, taking on the entire range and depravity of man’s sins.

Jesus, thirsting on the Cross for true disciples who love in return.

Jesus, the Son of God in obedience to the Father.

Jesus, the Christ of God in fidelity to mankind.

Jesus, therefore our Salvation.

Jesus, therefore our First Love.

Jesus, the only Pure Body bearing the marks.

Jesus, the only Sacred Blood pouring forth.

Jesus, suffering so that others might see and hear.

Jesus, dying so that others might live eternally.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, our Salvation and our First Love.

Kontakion 12

We are alive, Jesus, because You are risen from the dead and we are risen with You. For this we thank You with all the magnitude of thanksgiving, with all our heart, soul, and mind, with the fruits of our gifts and talents, and in loving obedience to all the Commandments, saying: Alleluia.

Ikos 12

Christ our Savior, You are truly risen, trampling down death by death, and now we partake of Your Divinity even as You partook of our mortality. We confess You before men, for we are not ashamed of the Gospel. We live in gratitude, for not to be grateful is not to be a disciple:

Jesus, vanquisher of malice and death.

Jesus, conqueror of sickness and dysfunction.

Jesus, the only foundation of holiness.

Jesus, the only wellspring of goodness.

Jesus, leaving behind an empty tomb.

Jesus, coming back to the Apostle Thomas.

Jesus, resisted by the proud.

Jesus, exalted by the humble.

Jesus, the only Risen Christ.

Jesus, the only Always Existing.

Jesus, accomplishing the will of the Father.

Jesus, becoming human and establishing the Church.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, our Salvation and our First Love.

Kontakion 13

Lord Jesus Christ, may our praises be found adequate, for we only wish to go on thanking You for the rest of our lives. You have led us to this point, after having done so much for us, and You have given us this glorious day to live and love in all gratitude. Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

(Repeat Kontakion 13 three times.)

A Prayer

We thank You, Lord Jesus Christ, and we pray to thank You with hearts which You have made pure and souls which You have made whole. We pray to see and hear spiritually, as examples of love and not of pretense, that we may be found worthy of You, our Salvation and our First Love.
