Akathist Hymn to Jesus Christ, Sustainer of Life

Kontakion 1

Our Lord Jesus Christ, Saviour of souls and Sustainer of Life, we seek Thee today that we may abide in Thee forever.  Thou only hast riches for the soul and strength for the body, and we seek Thee to worship Thee. Thou only hast understanding for the mind and serenity for the heart, and we seek Thee to obey Thee.  Accept our humble praises, Thou Who art all-glorious, for we are Thine and we say:

Glory to Thee, Jesus Christ, the Sustainer of Life.

 Ikos 1

Christ our God, we follow Thee for Thou art Thyself divine doctrine and the True Way.  Without Thee, knowledge is lifeless and conduct is changeable. Without Thee, love faileth and friendship delighteth in the ways of the world.  Yet Thou, Lord, hast called us Thy friends.  Since we have holy fellowship with Thee, we thereby have fellowship with one another.  For this cause, we gather before Thee and Thy blessed saints, and we sing praises unto Thy mighty upholding of Thy people and all creation:

Glory to Thee, Thou Who bringest forth the tapestry of mankind.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who weavest a divine thread throughout the earth.

Glory to Thee, for each human being is precious before Thee.

Glory to Thee, for Thy purifying presence is among Thy people.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who keepest all things in order.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who shinest a divine light upon mortals.

Glory to Thee, for the stars honour Thee in the night.

Glory to Thee, for the lilies open unto Thee in the morning.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who art worthy of adoration and devotion.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who desirest that all should rejoice and be glad.

Glory to Thee, for we can do all things through God.

Glory to Thee, for all things are possible unto those who love God.

Glory to Thee, Jesus Christ, the Sustainer of Life.

Kontakion 2

Thou dost guide us through the hazardous storms of life, Lord Jesus, that we may develop innermost hope and confidence in Thee.  No calamity is too great and no problem is too small for Thy heavenly attention, for Thou art with us always.  Relying upon Thy sustenance and mercy, we overcome all hardships and heartaches and thus acquire the Christian virtues, saying: Alleluia.

 Ikos 2

Thou wast nailed onto the Cross, enduring hostility and ridicule from Thy tormentors whom Thou didst continue to love even unto death. Christ our God, Thou wast unwanted by Thine own creation unto whom Thou didst offer forgiveness of sins and eternal life. No greater love hath any man for his friends, and therefore we Thy disciples welcome Thee and greet Thee with heartfelt praises:

Glory to Thee, for we praise Thee whether in church or on troubled waters.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who art a steady rock amidst the raging sea.

Glory to Thee, for we pray to Thee whether by candle light or beneath the desert sun.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who makest roses bloom in unlikely places.

Glory to Thee, for we trust Thee whether on the highest mountain or in the darkest valley.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who hearest the melodious harp as well as our moans of despair.

Glory to Thee, zeal of the apostles.

Glory to Thee, strength of the martyrs.

Glory to Thee, companion of the afflicted.

Glory to Thee, friend of the burdened.

Glory to Thee, face of the tormented.

Glory to Thee, voice of the ignored.

Glory to Thee, Jesus Christ, the Sustainer of Life.

Kontakion 3

We pray to Thee, Lord Jesus, and to the Father and to the Holy Ghost.  We pray in thanksgiving for the life which Thou hast given us, in humility for Thy forgiveness and patience, and in wonderment for Thine Incarnation and Crucifixion. We pray also for those who do not know Thee, that all mankind may be united with Thee in truth and love, and say: Alleluia.

Ikos 3

Thou dost answer all prayer, Christ God, even when it seemeth Thou hearest not our supplication.  Thou shewest a pure way forward through all circumstances, according to Thy great wisdom and for the sake of our restoration.  Thou discernest the seasons of sowing and harvesting, and Thou dost prepare us for eternal life.  Thou art Thyself, Jesus, the answer to all prayer. To behold Thee and to know Thee is the utmost blessing for all who sing praises unto Thee:

Glory to Thee, for we are a people of prayer.

Glory to Thee, for we all pray with one heart to God through the Psalms.

Glory to Thee, for we pray with heart, mind, and soul.

Glory to Thee, for we pray within the interiour of our being.

Glory to Thee, for we pray as the publican: God be merciful to me a sinner.

Glory to Thee, for we pray to do the will of our Father in Heaven.

Glory to Thee, for we combine prayer with watchfulness.

Glory to Thee, for our life is hidden with Thee.

Glory to Thee, for we pray in church, in union with one another in Thee.

Glory to Thee, for we pray together, of a single mind and heart.

Glory to Thee, for we do all things in Thy Name.

Glory to Thee, for we do for others as unto Thee.

Glory to Thee, Jesus Christ, the Sustainer of Life.

Kontakion 4

Thou art the Good Shepherd Who knowest Thy sheep by name, and Thy sheep hear Thee calling and follow Thee.  Thou art the tender caretaker and the perfect provider Who bringest Thy sheep unto green pastures. Thou givest Thy life for Thy sheep, and therefore the Father loveth Thee because Thou doest His will.  Thou lovest the Father, and the Father loveth Thee, and Thou lovest Thy sheep, and Thy sheep love Thee and say: Alleluia.

Ikos 4

There are sheep who have no shepherd, and there are sheep who follow false shepherds. In Thy compassion, Lord Jesus, Thou dost assemble all Thy sheep into one flock, so that none will perish which are under Thy care. Thou art come to unite all and to give life more abundantly. Therein we love Thee and in gladness we sing praises:

Glory to Thee, for Thou feedest those who are starving for truth.

Glory to Thee, for Thou art Thyself that nourishment.

Glory to Thee, for Thou carriest the weak upon Thy shoulders.

Glory to Thee, for Thou holdest the weary in Thine arms.

Glory to Thee, for Thou searchest for the prostitutes and receivest the prodigals.

Glory to Thee, for Thou bestowest new life upon the publicans.

Glory to Thee, for Thou defendest against deceptive shepherds.

Glory to Thee, for Thou guardest against theft and slaughter.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who art Lamb and Shepherd.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who art the Lover of mankind.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who didst knowingly sacrifice Thy life.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who didst willingly raise up Thy life again.

Glory to Thee, Jesus Christ, the Sustainer of Life.

Kontakion 5

Lord Jesus Christ, we acknowledge Thee as the Head of the Church.  We love Thee and follow Thee as our Master, for Thou hast opened the privilege of discipleship unto all people.  We therefore walk upon the narrow path, abiding in Thee with deep faith, so that we may partake in Thy goodness and obtain victory over sin and demons. Since Thou hast already conquered hell and death, we can say: Alleluia.

Ikos 5

Where wilt Thou lead me today, Christ God?  Wilt Thou put a stranger upon my path, that I may be a blessing unto Thy creation?  Will I encounter King Herod or Judas Iscariot, so that I may learn to suffer with Thee and thereby abide in Thee ever more deeply?  Wilt Thou send a holy elder or a simple child unto my door, that I may learn wisdom and humility?  Let me see Thine image in all people and grant that I may sing praises unto Thee:

Glory to Thee, Thou everlasting provision.

Glory to Thee, Thou enduring profit.

Glory to Thee, Thou sovereign wealth.

Glory to Thee, Thou sacred wellspring.

Glory to Thee, Thou immortal bread.

Glory to Thee, Thou eternal benefactor.

Glory to Thee, Thou righteous fullness.

Glory to Thee, Thou ripened field.

Glory to Thee, Thou immeasurable presence.

Glory to Thee, Thou mystical plenty.

Glory to Thee, Thou abundant banquet.

Glory to Thee, Thou admirable Being.

Glory to Thee, Jesus Christ, the Sustainer of Life.

Kontakion 6

Thou gavest bread and fish unto the multitudes, Lord Jesus, because Thou wast filled with compassion for their needs.  Notwithstanding, Thou didst say, “Labor not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give you: for Him hath God the Father sealed.”  Many people then did say: Alleluia.

 Ikos 6

Christ God, Thou hast given imperishable food unto Thy servants throughout the ages.  Thou didst sustain the hermits in the desert with Thy loving-kindness.  Thou didst bestow knowledge and wisdom upon the holy fathers.  Thou didst grant peace and contentment unto the monks and nuns in monasteries.  Thou didst bring blessings unto God-loving families. We implore Thee, our Saviour, to give us also bread from Heaven that we may always sing praises with gratitude:

Glory to Thee, Thou Who art the Bread of Life.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who comest down from Heaven.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who art the Living Water.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who givest life unto the world.

Glory to Thee, for the desert-dwellers never looked back.

Glory to Thee, for Thou didst surround them with Thy mercy.

Glory to Thee, for the holy fathers meditated upon Thy teachings.

Glory to Thee, for Thou didst bless them to partake of Thy glory.

Glory to Thee, for Saint Mary of Egypt found freedom in Thee.

Glory to Thee, for Saint John Chrysostom spake golden words of Thee.

Glory to Thee, for Saint Seraphim of Sarov beheld Thee in others.

Glory to Thee, for the unknown martyrs and saints are known by Thee.

Glory to Thee, Jesus Christ, the Sustainer of Life.

Kontakion 7

Let us learn from the Psalmist who said, “Many, O Lord my God, are Thy wonderful works which Thou hast done and Thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto Thee; if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.”  Indeed, God hath worked through the lives of countless many, and each person hath a place in His plan of salvation, that all might say: Alleluia.

Ikos 7

Yea, Jesus, Thou art Lord and God, as declared by the Apostle Thomas and to whom Thou didst reveal Thy wounds.  Thou gavest him a place among the other apostles, that his soul might be fulfilled in Thee and that Thy Lordship might be affirmed through his uncertainty and his courageous forthrightness.  May we wait upon Thee, Lord, until the end of our lives that we may also know Thee intimately and chant praises unto Thee:

Glory to Thee, gracious Lord of the insecure.

Glory to Thee, hospitable Lord of the lonely.

Glory to Thee, compassionate Lord of the last and least.

Glory to Thee, gentle Lord of the sensitive.

Glory to Thee, inclusive Lord of the rejected.

Glory to Thee, welcoming Lord of the alienated.

Glory to Thee, comforting Lord of the wounded.

Glory to Thee, responsive Lord of the lost.

Glory to Thee, approachable Lord of the prodigals.

Glory to Thee, listening Lord of the publicans.

Glory to Thee, enlightening Lord of the seekers.

Glory to Thee, openhearted Lord of the unnoticed.

Glory to Thee, Jesus Christ, the Sustainer of Life.

Kontakion 8

Thou dost offer sustenance unto all kinds of people, Lord Jesus, regardless of religious taboo and social standing.  Thou didst talk with the woman at the well, whose name was Photini, and Thou didst instill within her a yearning for the True God.  Although she was a female and of Samaritan mixed race, Thou didst ask to drink at her hands and didst likewise offer her Thy living water of eternal life.  Thereby released from death under the law, she went and said unto the people of the town: Alleluia.

Ikos 8

Thou didst also accept the ointment at the hands of the sinful woman.  She was despised and criticized, according to her sins and social status, but Thou didst commiserate with her misery and defend her repentance.  Thou didst make her an instrument of Thy love, Christ God, for Thou didst know beforehand that those who are forgiven much would love much and sing praises unto Thee:

Glory to Thee, for Thou satisfiest every need and fulillest all hope.

Glory to Thee, for Thou givest to each what is fitting for salvation.

Glory to Thee, for Thou art not confined to artificial boundaries.

Glory to Thee, for Thou art the Saviour of the entire human race.

Glory to Thee, for Thy Church hath declared Saint Photini as Equal-to-the-Apostles.

Glory to Thee, for Thou didst create in her a pure heart.

Glory to Thee, for she went beyond her boundaries to Carthage and Rome where she said: I will not renounce my Lord Christ.

Glory to Thee, for Thy Church hath also declared Mary Magdalene as Equal-to-the-Apostles.

Glory to Thee, for Thou didst establish in her a right spirit.

Glory to Thee, for she went beyond her boundaries to Rome, always saying: I have seen the Lord.

Glory to Thee Who regardest people according to Thy loving-kindness.

Glory to Thee Who forgivest trespasses according to Thy tender mercy.

Glory to Thee, Jesus Christ, the Sustainer of Life.

Kontakion 9

Thou didst take on human form for our sake, being born of the Virgin Mary, and then Thou didst walk upon the earth and make disciples of the people.  As a man, Thou didst live among men.  As the Word of God, Thou didst sustain all people and all creation.  As the Son, Thou wast always united with the Father.  Thou, Jesus, dost continue to save souls and Thy holy Mother doth unceasingly search for the lost, that all might say: Alleluia.

Ikos 9

Christ God, we are not able to save ourselves or find our way, for we defiled ourselves and forfeited our way.  Thou only art innocent and didst remain innocent after Thine Incarnation: unchanged and unblemished, not a myth or idol, but the sustenance and sanctification of mankind.  Thou art the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and we rejoice in Thy mercy and sing:

Glory to Thee, Thou Who gavest the Virgin Mary as a Mediatress unto the human race.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who art both the Maker and the First-Born of Thy blessed Mother.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who didst consecrate the virginity of the holy Maiden with Thine Incarnation.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who didst thereby teach all people to answer the divine call to service.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who canst not be contained in books.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who dost sustain the life of the universe.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who dost ask mankind: Whom say ye that I am?

Glory to Thee, Thou Who art The Christ of God.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who art the Word Himself, the Life of all.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who art the Saviour Who didst fulfill and abolish death.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who art the Ruler and King of creation.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who art the Lord and Master Who givest true knowledge and pure love.

Glory to Thee, Jesus Christ, the Sustainer of Life.

Kontakion 10

When Thou wast crucified, Lord Jesus, the earth quaked and the sun was darkened, and the thief and the centurion feared greatly.  Thy very creation was witness of Thy divinity and ransom, and said: Alleluia.

Ikos 10

Thou didst have the power to die and the power to rise again, Christ God, for Thou art Very God of Very God.  Thou didst willingly die for our salvation, as only Thou couldst accomplish in Thy mercy.  Thou didst die in order to be resurrected and to obtain victory over the power of evil and the dominion of death. We are therefore Thine and we rightfully offer Thee our humble praises:

Glory to Thee, Thou merciful fortification.

Glory to Thee, Thou magnificent feast.

Glory to Thee, Thou hardy sheaf.

Glory to Thee, Thou honourable shield.

Glory to Thee, Thou gracious garment.

Glory to Thee, Thou grandiose garden.

Glory to Thee, Thou endless supply.

Glory to Thee, Thou infinite surrounding.

Glory to Thee, Thou spacious palace.

Glory to Thee, Thou splendid power.

Glory to Thee, Thou receptive door.

Glory to Thee, Thou regal Divinity.

Glory to Thee, Jesus Christ, the Sustainer of Life.

Kontakion 11

Lord Jesus, Thou didst say, “Father, I will that they also, whom Thou hast given Me, be with Me where I am; that they may behold My glory, which Thou hast given Me: for Thou lovedst Me before the foundations of the world.”  We Thy disciples truly desire Thine eternal love, and we yearn to behold Thy glory now and always, saying: Alleluia.

Ikos 11

Christ God, we have heard the words which Thou hast spoken, and we know the promises therein.  We have the account of Thine apostles and the witness of Thy saints.  Let us, then, turn daily to the Scriptures and other sacred readings, that we may encounter Thy love and glory and also witness of Thee with conviction, continually singing praises unto Thee:

Glory to Thee, for nothing can separate us from Thy love.

Glory to Thee, for everything worketh for the good of believers.

Glory to Thee, in Thy forgiveness we have fellowship.

Glory to Thee, in Thy peace we are a reconciled people.

Glory to Thee, for we detach from worldly entrapment.

Glory to Thee, for Thy love overcometh demonic entanglement.

Glory to Thee, for Thou didst reveal perfect love on the Cross.

Glory to Thee, for Thou dost pardon all iniquity unto this day.

Glory to Thee, in Thy compassion we leave the past behind.

Glory to Thee, in Thy mercy we become new creatures.

Glory to Thee, for Thy love is not constrained by any barrier.

Glory to Thee, for we love Thee freely and follow Thee only.

Glory to Thee, Jesus Christ, the Sustainer of Life.

Kontakion 12

Thou hearest the prayers of the poor, Lord Jesus, and it pleases Thee to fulfill the afflicted with hope and blessedness.  Thou wast Thyself poor, meek, and humble.  Thou guidest the sincere disciple to acquire the true riches of the virtues. Faith in the True God is the greatest wealth and doth not fade away like the illusory happiness of the world.  Thou, Jesus, wilt defend and protect the lowly, and we therefore say: Alleluia.

Ikos 12

God is a jealous and faithful God, denouncing sin and reconciling mankind unto His love.  Thou, Jesus, art without sin, yet Thou dost love sinners and dost accomplish the will of the Father Who sent Thee to save us. We are become new creatures in Thee, and we unceasingly sing praises unto Thee:

Glory to Thee, Thou Who gavest Thy very life for Thy friends.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who shewest people how to live without reproach.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who dost participate in human events.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who art exalted unto the ends of the earth.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who hast drawn Thy followers out of the world.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who hast called Thy disciples unto Thee.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who findest the unfortunate.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who makest the solitary fruitful.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who speakest with sinful women.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who makest the outcasts holy.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who attendest to those afar off.

Glory to Thee, Thou Who makest the poor confident in Thee.

Glory to Thee, Jesus Christ, the Sustainer of Life.

Kontakion 13

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made. In Him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehendeth it not.” Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

(Repeat Kontakion 13 three times.)

A Prayer

Christ our God, since Thou hast taught us to pray, and since Thou Thyself didst pray to Thy Father, we implore Thee to hear our prayer today. We are Thine, for Thou wast incarnated and crucified for us, even though we are undeserving of Thy compassion and blessings.  Notwithstanding, Thou dost sustain all life with Thy merciful power and Thy limitless love. Thou hast conquered malice and death, and Thou hast shaped Thy Holy Church. Forgive us for ever having offended Thee.  We renounce everything that doth not align with Thy holiness and the Christian virtues.  We desire only to fulfill the will of the Heavenly Father.  We are Thy disciples, we adhere to the Scriptures and to the sacred teachings of the Church, and we pray never to offend Thee again.  We wish to abide in Thee, to know Thy truth and love which are superiour to all things and all ways and which have no end. Amen.
