Akathist Hymn to Jesus Christ upon Whom We Cast Our Cares

Kontakion 1

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, for Your yoke is easy and Your burden is light. You know the heart of each person, and You take our anxieties and concerns upon You. Hence, we submit our lives to You, every struggle and every goal, as we lift our voices in prayer:

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, upon Whom we cast our cares.

Ikos 1

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, glory to You. No other sheds his blood for our sins and makes us white as snow. No other forgives us countless times and offers us eternal life in the Kingdom of Heaven. Only You, Jesus, only You can rightfully say, “Follow Me,” and therefore we arise:

Jesus, Good Shepherd, lead us home.

Jesus, Divine King, draw us together.

Jesus, Sacred Teacher, bring us wholeness.

Jesus, Only Savior, send us healing.

Jesus, Very Light, permeate our darkness.

Jesus, Anointed One, fill our emptiness.

Jesus, Just Judge, pardon our crimes.

Jesus, Gracious Lord, forgive our debts.

Jesus, Radiant Sun, shine within us.

Jesus, Fruitful Vine, grow among us.

Jesus, Pure Truth, reach into us.

Jesus, Constant Love, pour upon us.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, upon Whom we cast our cares.

Kontakion 2

The world, oh, the world, Lord Jesus, weighs down upon us in so many ways, and then we lose our way. We take our eyes off You, Jesus, off Your Holy Cross, and then we feel alone and we are overwhelmed by our cares. Yet, we are baptized Christians and we say: Alleluia.

Ikos 2

Jesus Christ, You have overcome the world. You have trampled down death by death, and You are risen from the dead. We are risen with You in Holy Baptism, as new creatures with a new life, and on this new day we have eyes only for You:

Jesus, we place our sorrows at the foot of Your Cross.

Jesus, for You welcome the worried and the troubled.

Jesus, we repent at the sight of one droplet of Your Blood.

Jesus, for You suffered and died for the sins of all mankind.

Jesus, we stand in solidarity and proclaim, “You are the Christ.”

Jesus, for You were obedient even unto death by crucifixion.

Jesus, we reflect on our purpose and meaning in the world.

Jesus, for You are the God-Man Who makes all creation new.

Jesus, we choose life and to ascend the ladder of virtues.

Jesus, for You became man to give us life more abundantly.

Jesus, we dedicate our souls to spiritual fruitfulness.

Jesus, for You profit those who put their trust in You.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, upon Whom we cast our cares.

Kontakion 3

We have goals and plans, Christ God, and we try to discern the will of the Heavenly Father in our lives. Yes, we pray for guidance in our decisions, before and after, and in the midst of our activities, every time, that we might please God in everything and say: Alleluia.

Ikos 3

Our Savior, our one and only Savior, You did the will of the Father at all times. You were incarnated and baptized, transfigured and crucified, and resurrected and ascended in life-giving obedience to gain our redemption. Greater love has never been shown to any of us:

Jesus, Most Trustworthy, guide our feet.

Jesus, Most Praiseworthy, uplift our hearts.

Jesus, Most Beautiful, direct our eyes.

Jesus, Most Glorious, illumine our minds.

Jesus, Most Pure, search for us.

Jesus, Most Innocent, bear with us.

Jesus, Most Triumphant, rule over us.

Jesus, Most Immortal, act through us.

Jesus, Most Priestly, bless us generously.

Jesus, Most Royal, protect us mightily.

Jesus, Most Beloved, convert us thoroughly.

Jesus, Most Sacrificial, save us ineffably.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, upon Whom we cast our cares.

Kontakion 4

Our lives are beset with the necessity of money and with the buying and selling of things. Dear Jesus, we need provision and we accumulate possessions. But sometimes we obsess over and this and that, and we lust after more and more, even as we try to follow You and say: Alleluia.

Ikos 4

Jesus Christ, our Lord and King, let us be resourceful but charitable, and not only manage in the world but rejoice in our souls. Let us be servants of one Master. Let us spend wisely, trade honestly, give freely, and build our homes on the rock of faith:

Jesus, our trust is in You and not in our monetary wellbeing.

Jesus, for God cannot fail in His plan of salvation.

Jesus, our hope is in You and not in our material comfort.

Jesus, for You became like us and we shall be like You.

Jesus, our faith is in You and not in our guarded storehouses.

Jesus, for God adds all things to those who seek the Kingdom.

Jesus, our happiness is in You and not in passing novelties.

Jesus, for You are the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Jesus, our confidence is in You and not in financial projects.

Jesus, for God tends to the flowers and the birds.

Jesus, our strength is in You and not in property ownership.

Jesus, for You are the Head of the Church.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, upon Whom we cast our cares.

Kontakion 5

Children are a blessing and yet children are a great responsibility. Jesus Christ, Son of God, we have sons and daughters who require food and clothing, education and training, and all the basic things as well as various kinds of enrichment, that they may flourish and say: Alleluia.

Ikos 5

Let us not fail the younger generation, spiritually or concretely, and may these two facets of God-given life always be interwoven to His glory. Lord Jesus, You were once a helpless infant, a growing child, and may all young people come unto You and form the Heavenly Kingdom:

Jesus, Human Flesh, supply our needs.

Jesus, Living God, fulfill our hopes.

Jesus, Risen Life, purify our disposition.

Jesus, Eternal Joy, spark our motivation.

Jesus, Sinless Son, absolve us mercifully.

Jesus, New Adam, replenish us daily.

Jesus, Genuine Cornerstone, uphold us firmly.

Jesus, Solid Foundation, unite us everlastingly.

Jesus, Glad Tidings, speak to us.

Jesus, Christ Himself, come to us.

Jesus, Complete Virtue, implant in us.

Jesus, Total Love, remain in us.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, upon Whom we cast our cares.

Kontakion 6

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, glory be to You forever and ever. Glory to You for the Gospel and for all the lessons of holiness which You impart to us. Glory to You for the compassion You show us when we feel worried and troubled, and for enabling us to say with the saints: Alleluia.

Ikos 6

Blessed be Your Name, Jesus Christ, and all those who pray in Your Name and who work to Your glory. Blessed are those who are members of Your true family and who find delight in doing the will of the Heavenly Father. Blessed are those who cast their cares upon You:

Jesus, we yearn to be children and heirs of God.

Jesus, for You nourish us with everlasting words.

Jesus, we wish to be perfect and holy disciples.

Jesus, for You conquered our sins on the Cross.

Jesus, we endeavor to be witnesses of the Faith.

Jesus, for You desire that none should be lost.

Jesus, we aspire to think with Churchly-mindedness.

Jesus, for You are the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

Jesus, we strive to follow You in suffering and in joy.

Jesus, for You are the light on our path.

Jesus, we hope to be a blessing to everyone we meet.

Jesus, for You offer Your message to the last and the least.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, upon Whom we cast our cares.

Kontakion 7

The world, oh, the world, Lord Jesus, makes so many demands upon our time, energy, and money. We are in the world but not of the world, and we render unto Caesar that which is demanded of us. Yet, there are situations in which we must disobey man in order to obey God and say: Alleluia.

Ikos 7

Christ God, despised by the authorities, crucified though innocent of any crime, nailed to the Cross while offering eternal life to Your persecutors, pierced in the side while forgiving Your tormentors, we bow before You and we worship You:

Jesus, Most Attentive, show us holiness.

Jesus, Most Vigilant, grant us eternity.

Jesus, Most Rational, keep us coherent.

Jesus, Most Authentic, preserve us apostolic.

Jesus, Most Obedient, minister to us.

Jesus, Most Heavenly, open to us.

Jesus, Most Essential, be to us.

Jesus, Most Friendly, beckon to us.

Jesus, Most Plentiful, quench our thirst.

Jesus, Most Charitable, honor our requests.

Jesus, Most Alive, extinguish our impurities.

Jesus, Most Present, erase our trespasses.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, upon Whom we cast our cares.

Kontakion 8

Even as we do the will of God, we must prepare ourselves for His work by using the systems of the world. Usually, this means to obtain an education, often in schools that are hostile to Christianity. Dear Jesus, show mercy to Godly-minded students, so that everyone can say: Alleluia.

Ikos 8

Jesus, our Lord and King, not all knowledge is true knowledge, and not all knowledge glorifies You or prepares us for the Heavenly Kingdom. Help us, Holy Rabbi, to steer a path of prayer through the education process, that we may become true scholars and professionals:

Jesus, our quest is to learn of You.

Jesus, for You sent your disciples to make more disciples.

Jesus, our pursuit is to acquire proper knowledge and skills.

Jesus, for You defend us as sheep among thieves.

Jesus, our mission is to exhibit Your truth and love.

Jesus, for You spared nothing on our behalf.

Jesus, our aim is to do what is right, good, and true.

Jesus, for You guide us as You guided the apostles.

Jesus, our goal is to serve the Holy Church.

Jesus, for You nurture our gifts and talents.

Jesus, our purpose is to glow as candles in the darkness.

Jesus, for You changed the course of history.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, upon Whom we cast our cares.

Kontakion 9

We no longer live in an agricultural society, but in an industrial age that is rapidly becoming a technological age. We take jobs at companies that do not always treat us fairly, and  we incur challenges to our Christian beliefs. Yet always to You, Jesus, we humbly say: Alleluia.

Ikos 9

Yes, to You, Jesus, we endlessly say, “alleluia,” and we pray morning and evening. We come home from work, and we thank You for food and rest and for the peace of the night. To You, Jesus, we pour out our heartfelt praises and petitions, for You understand us:

Jesus, Perfect Way, accept our worship.

Jesus, Mystical Supper, deify our lives.

Jesus, Uncreated Image, expand our love.

Jesus, Perpetual Fullness, increase our resources.

Jesus, Inner Peace, find us quickly.

Jesus, Only Goodness, include us vitally.

Jesus, Honest Affirmation, form us sacredly.

Jesus, Confident Validation, secure us deeply.

Jesus, All Things, reveal to us.

Jesus, Abundant Treasure, ensue to us.

Jesus, Wise Counsel, disclose to us.

Jesus, Right Beginning, return to us.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, upon Whom we cast our cares.

Kontakion 10

Our Savior, Jesus Christ, we cherish Your icons and we venerate them in church and at home. Oh, how we cherish the “Pantocrator” and rely on Your daily assurance of our calling. How we cherish the image “Not Made by Hands” and rejoice to say before You: Alleluia.

Ikos 10

How blessed were those who followed You in the flesh, who sat at Your feet, who stood before the Holy Cross and who found the empty tomb. Blessed are those who believe in You today, who have received Your forgiveness and mercy, and who declare Your sovereignty:

Jesus, we carry Your icons in procession.

Jesus, for You are with us always.

Jesus, we pray before Your Holy Face.

Jesus, for You are our only and our all.

Jesus, we bow our heads in humility.

Jesus, for You have divine authority from God.

Jesus, we lift our hearts in hope.

Jesus, for You prepare a mansion in Heaven.

Jesus, we give a helping hand to our brother.

Jesus, for You command us to love one another.

Jesus, we say a prayer for our sister.

Jesus, for You love us with undying love.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, upon Whom we cast our cares.

Kontakion 11

Our lives are filled with daily tasks which we perform dutifully for the upkeep of our homes and for the welfare of our loved ones. Whether we are appreciated or not, we attend to those who depend upon us, that all in our household might learn to say to You, Jesus: Alleluia.

Ikos 11

Dear Jesus, in the prime of life we uphold our responsibilities at home and amid the turmoil of the world. We balance our roles as providers and homemakers with our roles as citizens of a complex nation. In this everyday busyness, we pause to pray:

Jesus, Most Poor, visit our homes.

Jesus, Most Meek, enfold our country.

Jesus, Most Prudent, oversee our leaders.

Jesus, Most Noble, establish our values.

Jesus, Most Humble, live among us.

Jesus, Most Patient, work within us.

Jesus, Most Lovely, overflow upon us.

Jesus, Most Desirable, exult above us.

Jesus, Most Mature, tolerate us longer.

Jesus, Most Sober, touch us innermost.

Jesus, Most Transformational, render us presentable.

Jesus, Most Inspirational, make us viable.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, upon Whom we cast our cares.

Kontakion 12

It seems to happen overnight that we find ourselves old and coping with further worries and troubles. Jesus Christ, our Lord and King, we cannot endure without Your mercy, for our bodies are slow and our means are few. Yet, we trust in You and say: Alleluia.

Ikos 12

Forgive us, Wonderful Savior, for a lifetime of sins, for not trusting You more, and for not casting our cares upon You as we could have. We allowed the world to distract us. Christ God, graft us into a vigorous spirituality so that even now we might blossom forth:

Jesus, our days are long but the years are short.

Jesus, for God can make the aged productive.

Jesus, our time is soon coming to an end.

Jesus, for You seal us with precious ointment.

Jesus, our lessons in holiness have reached the final phase.

Jesus, for God knows whether we loved with undying love.

Jesus, our hope is to rest where there is no consent to evil.

Jesus, for You know whether we clothed the naked.

Jesus, our purpose on earth is nearly completed.

Jesus, for God has chastised and purified us.

Jesus, our eyes focus on the Holy Cross.

Jesus, for You call us to prayer.

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, upon Whom we cast our cares.

Kontakion 13

Jesus Christ, to Whom all glory is due, we thank You for attending to us at every stage of life. The young and the old, those in the middle, everyone with worries and troubles, and all who believe in You come forth to cast their cares upon You today. Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

(Repeat Kontakion 13 three times.)

Kontakion 1 (repeated)

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, for Your yoke is easy and Your burden is light. You know the heart of each person, and You take our anxieties and concerns upon You. Hence, we submit our lives to You, every struggle and every goal, as we lift our voices in prayer:

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, upon Whom we cast our cares.

A Prayer

Glory to You, Jesus Christ, for You know us and we gratefully approach You as Your disciples. Glory to You for hearing our plea and for letting us hear the message of the Gospel. Glory to You for looking into our plight and for letting us look upon Your holy icons. Glory to You for conquering death and for enabling us to live abundantly. Glory to You, Jesus Christ, for we trust in You now and forever. Amen.
