Akathist Hymn to the Apostle Timothy

Kontakion 1

O God to Whom all glory is due: in those earliest days of Christianity it was  the holy apostles who increased the flock. Included among the apostles known as the Seventy was Saint Timothy, a man of faith and prayer and a spiritual son of Saint Paul. We are indebted to him and today we proclaim:

Rejoice, Saint Timothy, apostle whose faith endured unto martyrdom.

Ikos 1

Saint Timothy, we beseech you to open our souls to pure doctrine and right worship, to strengthen our commitment to the virtues in our daily lives, and to uphold our service to the Church in all fruitfulness, even as Saint Paul encouraged you to persevere in the True Faith:

Rejoice, steadfast pastor and missionary who was appointed bishop.

Rejoice, fellow partaker and faithful worker in apostolic obedience.

Rejoice, for you fulfilled the message of Jesus Christ and the Holy Gospel.

Rejoice, for you rightly spread the word of truth as you were sent to do.

Rejoice, worthy apostle in the Seventy and a member of Christ’s Body.

Rejoice, earnest follower who flourished through the effort of Saint Paul.

Rejoice, for you were content in every place to do the will of the Father.

Rejoice, for you were pleased under all conditions to build up the Church.

Rejoice, peaceable man who prayed for the salvation of the wayward.

Rejoice, spiritual warrior who expounded truth without vain argument.

Rejoice, for you taught the good news and performed charitable deeds.

Rejoice, for you pursued righteousness and desired eternal blessedness.

Rejoice, Saint Timothy, apostle whose faith endured unto martyrdom.

Kontakion 2

Saint Timothy, impart to us the lessons which you received from the Apostle Paul who was your father in Christ, for you are also a father to those who seek salvation from the darkness of evil. Lead us to the unfailing light of the Gospel and Epistles, and to this we say: Alleluia.

Ikos 2

We desire sacred inclusion, Saint Timothy, that we may be united with all True Christians throughout time and with one another at present, and that we may abide in Christ with all purity and charity. May the Heavenly Father find us pleasing in His sight, for we hasten to do His will on earth:

Rejoice, illuminated apostle of the Light of the World.

Rejoice, invigorated disciple of the Bread of Life.

Rejoice, for you persevered and fought the good fight.

Rejoice, for you endured and loved from a clean heart.

Rejoice, cheerful laborer in the commission entrusted to you.

Rejoice, reliable instructor in the knowledge delivered to you.

Rejoice, for you walked in humility and without hypocrisy.

Rejoice, for you worked diligently and without distraction.

Rejoice, zealous athlete in the righteousness of God.

Rejoice, worthy soldier in the whole message of the Gospel.

Rejoice, for you died completely to wickedness.

Rejoice, for you arose equipped for sacredness.

Rejoice, Saint Timothy, apostle whose faith endured unto martyrdom.

Kontakion 3

Saint Timothy, you were born in Lystra, in Asia Minor, and your father was a Gentile and your mother was a Jewess. The Apostles Paul and Barnabas preached in Lystra, and there the Apostle Paul healed a crippled man. Many townspeople then believed in Jesus Christ, and they said: Alleluia.

Ikos 3

You were a young boy, Saint Timothy, taken by your mother, Eunice, and your grandmother, Lois, to hear the good news. Herein developed a pious household of Christians, three generations of believers at once, and Saint Paul would later praise the genuine faith of your family:

Rejoice, blessed boy in the presence of wise women.

Rejoice, young man in the care of those dedicated to virtue.

Rejoice, for you listened intently to your mother and grandmother.

Rejoice, for you observed closely their lives of work and prayer.

Rejoice, eager child in the Commandments of God.

Rejoice, keen pupil in the Beatitudes of Jesus Christ.

Rejoice, for you found an advisor and father in the Apostle Paul.

Rejoice, for you strayed not from pure doctrine and a good conscience.

Rejoice, beloved member of family and Church.

Rejoice, faithful contributor to future generations.

Rejoice, for you treasured your foundation of truth and prayer.

Rejoice, for you preserved your heritage of mercy and righteousness.

Rejoice, Saint Timothy, apostle whose faith endured unto martyrdom.

Kontakion 4

Saint Timothy, we know that God sent Jesus Christ into the world, His Only-Begotten Son and our only hope, to save us from sin. Then, Christ sent the apostles to preach the Gospel and build up the Church. In this manner, we respond to the calling of repentance and salvation, and we say: Alleluia.

Ikos 4

We have heard the good news: the Incarnation of Christ, His great mercy, His suffering on the Cross, and His glorious Resurrection. He destroyed death so that we could rise into eternal life. Saint Timothy, we thank you for preserving these teachings and for your personal example of holiness:

Rejoice, brilliant flame of truth, illuminating the contrite.

Rejoice, deep well of charity, equipping the deprived.

Rejoice, abundant field of prayer, helping without obligation.

Rejoice, green branch of wisdom, teaching without partiality.

Rejoice, glowing star of compassion, guiding the lost.

Rejoice, spacious sky of mercy, releasing the captives.

Rejoice, clear water of integrity, preaching without hesitation.

Rejoice, constant ray of honor, relating without vanity.

Rejoice, glistening snow of obedience, serving the multitude.

Rejoice, sparkling river of goodwill, visiting the sorrowful.

Rejoice, high mountain of hope, beckoning without arrogance.

Rejoice, wide cavern of tranquility, sheltering without resentment.

Rejoice, Saint Timothy, apostle whose faith endured unto martyrdom.

Kontakion 5

Saint Timothy, because of the apostolic transmission of pure doctrine and holy tradition, True Christianity has not altered since its early beginnings. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and His apostles were sent to make disciples of all peoples, and therein we say: Alleluia.

Ikos 5

We believe as you believed, Saint Timothy, and as Saint Paul believed, for the teachings of the Church are valid throughout time and across different places. These truths are explained and clarified, but never altered, and they are alive in the speech and actions of every True Christian:

Rejoice, grateful inheritor of unchanging truth.

Rejoice, thankful partaker of unbroken unity.

Rejoice, for you were holy because God is holy.

Rejoice, for you prayed unceasingly and acquired the virtues.

Rejoice, united participant in the wholeness of the Church.

Rejoice, vital witness to the power of truth and mercy.

Rejoice, for you understood Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

Rejoice, for you loved the Redeemer Who gives abundant life.

Rejoice, strong follower of the True God of True God.

Rejoice, firm disciple of the Savior Who came down from Heaven.

Rejoice, for you worshipped and made supplications.

Rejoice, for you interceded and gave thanks.

Rejoice, Saint Timothy, apostle whose faith endured unto martyrdom.

Kontakion 6

Saint Timothy, when the Apostle Paul visited Lystra a second time, along with the Apostle Silas, you had become an esteemed Christian man in the region. Your mother and grandmother were also notable for their lives of  good works, for prayer at home and in church, and for saying: Alleluia.

Ikos 6

You became a disciple of Saint Paul, laboring with him and also Saint Silas in their missionary endeavors. Saint Timothy, your love of Jesus Christ was so great that you left the home of your beloved mother and grandmother, in order to serve the Church and bring souls to salvation:

Rejoice, Godly man who desired that each person be saved.

Rejoice, committed worker who offered true knowledge freely.

Rejoice, for you instructed the brethren in the word of God.

Rejoice, for you nourished the congregation with pure doctrine.

Rejoice, zealous missionary who meditated on love and salvation.

Rejoice, for you renounced worldliness and gained contentment.

Rejoice, for you departed your homeland and reached the multitude.

Rejoice, for you continued in what you had learned from childhood.

Rejoice, Saint Timothy, apostle whose faith endured unto martyrdom.

Kontakion 7

Saint Timothy, we venerate the Seventy Apostles: each apostle for his labor and faithfulness, and all the Seventy together on the feast known as the Synaxis of the Seventy Apostles. Moreover, we praise you in particular for your holy relationship with the Apostle Paul, and we say: Alleluia.

Ikos 7

To be the spiritual son of a holy apostle is a wonderful blessing, but only if God thus orders the life of both spiritual father and spiritual son. Let each Christian respond to the calling of God, according to gifts and talents, and let us turn to the Gospel and Epistles for knowledge and guidance:

Rejoice, cherished son of your joyful mother, Eunice.

Rejoice, welcomed grandson of your delighted grandmother, Lois.

Rejoice, for you reflected their gentle demeanor.

Rejoice, for you acquired their strength of character.

Rejoice, spiritual son and companion of the great Apostle Paul.

Rejoice, apostle equal in status with all the Seventy Apostles.

Rejoice, for you professed the same Faith as given to the Twelve.

Rejoice, for you desired eternal life with all apostles and disciples.

Rejoice, mortal man and redeemed child of the Father Almighty.

Rejoice, unique being in communion with all other Churchly beings.

Rejoice, for you treated all Christians as brothers and sisters.

Rejoice, for you respected all elders as fathers and mothers.

Rejoice, Saint Timothy, apostle whose faith endured unto martyrdom.

Kontakion 8

Saint Timothy, you pursued Jesus Christ, for unless you saved yourself you would not be able to save thousands. You understood that the Son of God is begotten, not made, and He is therefore the God-Man Who was born in the flesh that we might become divine, and you said: Alleluia.

Ikos 8

Jesus Christ never sinned, for the Son of God was perfect and obedient: our gracious Lord and rightful King Who will judge the living and the dead. Saint Timothy, you consistently preached the Holy Gospel and pure doctrine, and you thereby readied yourself for the conclusion of your of life:

Rejoice, follower of Christ, vanquisher of falsehood.

Rejoice, apostle of Christ, guardian of truth.

Rejoice, son of Paul, thankful to predecessors.

Rejoice, attentive in worship, example for the flock.

Rejoice, Saint Timothy, apostle whose faith endured unto martyrdom.

Kontakion 9

Saint Timothy, due to your excellence in the ways of the Heavenly Father and the teachings of the Church, Saint Paul appointed you the first Bishop of Ephesus. You served in this position for fifteen years, faithful to truth and loyal to the duties of a good shepherd, always saying: Alleluia.

Ikos 9

In the city of Ephesus, there were many pagans who rejected Jesus Christ and who would eventually persecute you, for you were His follower and you preached His message. Saint Timothy, from your childhood in Lystra to your episcopate in Ephesus, you did not fear but loved completely:

Rejoice, hospitable bishop among friends and foes.

Rejoice, generous teacher among young and old.

Rejoice, for you served in whatever capacity pleased God.

Rejoice, for you focused on bringing forth the good news.

Rejoice, meek overseer who prayed for every resident of the city.

Rejoice, for you lived piously in your time and place.

Rejoice, Saint Timothy, apostle whose faith endured unto martyrdom.

Kontakion 10

Saint Timothy, amid your many responsibilities, it seems you had health problems. Your father in Christ, Saint Paul, who attended to your whole development, advised you to drink a little wine for your stomach and other infirmities, and in concern for your physical survival, he said: Alleluia.

Ikos 10

We therefore turn to you for both spiritual and bodily needs, for we are fallen creatures and we suffer from ailments and deterioration. We pray for contentment in all circumstances, for healing as well as endurance to the end, and to be temples of God and fulfill His holy will in our lives:

Rejoice, interior soul of contemplation and stillness.

Rejoice, able worker of goodness and restoration.

Rejoice, for you profited the entire Church with your prayers.

Rejoice, for you reached many generations through your obedience.

Rejoice, faithful apostle to those who never heard or saw.

Rejoice, uplifting preacher to those needing reinforcement in truth.

Rejoice, for you recognized the ills of fallen humans.

Rejoice, for you glorified God for His great compassion.

Rejoice, humble servant of sinners which Christ came to save.

Rejoice, loyal witness of truths which offend the demons.

Rejoice, for you endured hardship for the sake of the Kingdom.

Rejoice, Saint Timothy, apostle whose faith endured unto martyrdom.

Kontakion 11

Saint Timothy, next to Christ Himself, you emulated the Apostle Paul in all things, for Paul was a follower of Christ and called by Him to be an apostle. You did nothing from conceit or defiance, but only in accordance with the Gospel and apostolic obedience, and you said: Alleluia.

Ikos 11

You encountered various forms of godlessness: imposters and deceivers, corruptors and schemers, and all the sins and evils of which men and women are capable. Saint Timothy, you upheld pure doctrine and fulfilled your vocation in righteousness, following Paul who followed Christ:

Rejoice, honest man living in the presence of God.

Rejoice, sober apostle learning from a worthy advisor.

Rejoice, for you practiced your beliefs.

Rejoice, for you gained your requests.

Rejoice, transformed believer longing for Eternity.

Rejoice, renewed Christian yearning for Heaven.

Rejoice, for you gave all and held nothing back.

Rejoice, for you brought forth good fruit.

Rejoice, gifted intellect expounding pure doctrine.

Rejoice, purified heart expressing bountiful love.

Rejoice, for you scorned worship of materialism.

Rejoice, for you renounced attachment to mammon.

Rejoice, Saint Timothy, apostle whose faith endured unto martyrdom.

Kontakion 12

Saint Timothy, in his final days Saint Paul found himself alone and unaided: only one colleague remained with him. Yet, he was fortified by God and he wrote another letter to you. He asked you to visit him, perhaps to see you once more before his death, and also to say: Alleluia.

Ikos 12

Your life also concluded in martyrdom, Saint Timothy, for the pagans of Ephesus beat and stoned you as you interrupted a celebration exalting the idols. The enraged pagans killed you because you offered them the love of Jesus Christ and the doctrine of the Holy Church:

Rejoice, courageous voice of truth, joining the martyrs.

Rejoice, generous soul of deliverance, facing the persecutors.

Rejoice, great storehouse of knowledge, instructing the multitude.

Rejoice, vast reservoir of mercy, feeding the thousands.

Rejoice, cool breeze of experience, utilizing the time.

Rejoice, gentle rain of longevity, receiving the grace.

Rejoice, beautiful harbor of prayer, singing to Heaven.

Rejoice, excellent shore of friendship, belonging to God.

Rejoice, spiritual strength of family, leading to salvation.

Rejoice, divine peace of solitude, spreading to creation.

Rejoice, burning candle of consolation, united to ancestors.

Rejoice, overflowing cup of charity, gracious to wanderers.

Rejoice, Saint Timothy, apostle whose faith endured unto martyrdom.

Kontakion 13

Saint Timothy, you did not seek your own glory, but in all things sought to glorify God and to offer salvation through Jesus Christ. You did not lust after worldly satisfactions, but devoted your life to building up the Church and teaching true doctrine. Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

(Repeat Kontakion 13 three times.)

 A Prayer

Saint Timothy, we ask for mercy and illumination, that we might be true followers of the Christ Who sent you forth to minister to the churches and all people. We pray to clearly speak within pure doctrine and to fittingly represent the True Faith to the world. Make us worthy descendants of your ministry, help us to preserve our heritage of truth and virtue by teaching it and living it, and fortify us to prepare ourselves for the conclusion of our life on earth. May we give all glory to God and be found worthy of Heaven. Amen.
